Taco Bell: the company history & bringing back fan favorite

The Truth About Taco Bell's Dollar Menu:

McDonald's might have the most famous dollar menu in fast food, but it's not the dollar menu it once was. Today, if fast food lovers really want a dollar menu that can include up to 21 items for just $1, there's really only one place to go - Taco Bell.

If you've ever had a late-night craving for crispy tacos and an ice-cold Mountain Dew Baja Blast, chances are you've headed to your local Taco Bell. With locations in every state (a dedicated fan has even traveled the country to eat at a Taco Bell in each) and nearly 30 countries, the chain is pretty ubiquitous.

Of course, the menu has undergone some changes over the years. The original restaurant served crispy tacos (which English-speaking customers apparently called Tay-Kohs) as well as something called the chiliburger, but the restaurant's offerings have evolved over the years to include the beloved Taco Bell menu items. abandoned like the Enchirito, Extreme Nachos and probably the best forgotten seafood salad.

Even if you've mastered the art of the Crunchwrap Supreme recipe copycat and your glove box is overflowing with packets of Fire Sauce you refuse to let go of, there's still plenty you might not know about Taco Bell. From the story of how they came up with their now famous Doritos Locos Tacos to some of their wackiest promotions, these weird Taco Bell facts might just end up making you hungry enough to get behind the wheel.

Does Taco Bell offer vegetarian options?
Does Taco Bell have meatless tacos?
Does Taco Bell have vegetarian meat?

Taco Bell has some of the best vegetarian fast food options:

Taco Bell may be known for its meaty entrees like the Chipotle Chicken Grill and the Budget-Friendly Fried Beef Burrito, but like many other fast food joints, it's making expanding their vegan and vegetarian options a priority.

While Taco Bell has always been a good option for those who don't eat meat (you can replace any of the meat items on their menu with beans, rice, or potatoes, which are all vegan, and their guacamole can be replaced with sour cream)

There are vegetarian combinations diners can choose from at Taco Bell, and the chain is also testing its first official vegetarian menu. They even have a guide to eating vegan at Taco Bell on their website, which shows diners how to make some of their most classic dishes, like Crunchwrap Supreme and the soft taco, both meat and dairy-free.

What did Taco Bell originally sell?

Taco Bell originally sold hot dogs and hamburgers:

Glen Bell's first restaurant didn't sell tacos at all - it sold hot dogs and hamburgers. It was at Bell's Drive-In, which was Bell's first restaurant, incidentally operating out of San Bernardino, which is also the birthplace of McDonalds.

Glenn eventually expanded his business, opening Taco Tia, where he sold hot dogs, hamburgers, and tacos (his chili dog recipe was the inspiration for Taco Bell's original taco sauce). He initially decided to open his restaurant in a Mexican neighborhood so that if taco sales took off, his competitors would view it as a regional success, rather than one that could be replicated elsewhere. Eventually, Bell realized that tacos were the key to his business success and should be his focus, especially after inventing pre-formed taco shells and figuring out how to quickly serve tacos to the masses instead of cooking tacos on ordered. He opened a restaurant called El Taco, then eventually sold his shares in it and his Taco Tia locations to open the first Taco Bell in 1962 in Downey, California.

Where was the original Taco Bell?
Does the original Taco Bell still exist?

The original Taco Bell has been moved to company headquarters:

The first Taco Bell restaurant opened in 1962 in Downey, California, but 'Number One Taco Bell', as the company calls it, ceased to operate as Taco Bell in 1986.

However, even though the building was no longer an official Taco Bell restaurant, it was leased out to other taquerias over the years until 2014 when it was permanently abandoned...that is- that is, until Taco Bell decided they couldn't rent it. this piece of their history is demolished.

Instead, they decided to lift the building from its foundation and transport it to the company's current headquarters in Irvine, California, 72 km away. The trip took place on November 19, 2015, and luckily the little 400-square-foot building made it safely through the streets of Los Angeles to its new home. The trip was even documented on video so superfans of the channel could witness his migration.

The chain hasn't said what plans, if any, they have for Taco Bell Numero Uno now that it's safely settled in its new location, but at the very least they've retained an important piece of the company history.

Taco Bell introduced the Mexican Pizza in 1988 - a unique blend of two different styles, you could call it the first "fusion" dish to hit the mainstream and really stick. Mexican pizza has gone through a few changes over the years but at the heart of it, the formula remains the same. Taco Bell eliminated the pizza in November 2020 as part of a broader culling of its menus during the height of the pandemic that helped fast food chains shed complexities and costs. The beloved menu item will permanently reappear on menus beginning May 19, the chain confirmed Monday.

Well, according to an inflation calculator, 19 cents in 1965 equals $1.56 in 2020. That's right, Taco Bell fans, the good old days weren't so good and you actually get better offers - and certainly more variety - with today's Taco Bell value menu than you would have had 55 years ago.
