What EDM stands for is an acronym that stands for "Electronic Dance Music". But to believe that these three words are enough to describe and classify electronic music is false. It is classified in more than fifty different styles. This musical genre is still very recent in the history of music, but it has evolved and is still evolving at a phenomenal speed. This article is there to demystify the different musical genres of electronic music. Everything is better with music - Unknow HOUSE: Originally from Chicago, House is a style that no longer exists today, it has evolved so much that today we can no longer find purely House music. But this style remains the basis of several sub-genres, for example the Tropical-House or the Deep-House. ELECTRO: Following the popularity base of disco, the authors seek to create music with more rhythm and much more bass. Much like House, this style of music no longer really exists today, but it is the basis of many styles of electronic music today. TECHNO: A music essentially created on computer, it presents an extremely high rhythm. A genre that is still heard and produced today. ELECTRO-HOUSE: The genre most listened to today. It’s a mix of the House’s bass and electro rhythm. Djs mixing electro-house often add the melody of songs that play a lot on the radio, making this kind of music much accessible to the general public.
PROGRESSIVE: The progressive is rather a way of building your music. Most DJs today use this format since it is very popular. As the name suggests, it’s a way to bring a song gradually, you start with a “Break”, a slightly softer melody, then is followed by a “Drop”, an extremely powerful rhythm. It is also a way for the DJ to gradually increase the RPM during a performance. TROPICAL HOUSE: Characterized by a rather sweet melody with a tropical flavor, this style of electronic music is much calmer. Often accompanying speech this style is accessible to all and sometimes plays on the radio. DEEP HOUSE: A much slower style of music than the original House, it is often composed of a very complex melody with rather deep and bewitching voices. It's not the kind of music where the crowds go wild, but rather a calmer and catchy genre. A DJ who represents this facet of electronic music very well is without a doubt Oliver Heldens. ELECTRO-POP: A very popular genre, which often plays on the radio too. It is the fact of combining very sustained rhythms with the melody and the word of a popular pop song. Often used at music festivals DJs can ensure that the crowd will know the mixes they will offer since they are from pop music. PROGRESSIVE HOUSE: It's just House, but the DJs incorporate the essential elements of the progressive, the rhythm changes made with Breaks and Drop in order to create an emotion.
